This last week has been a doozy for our administration doubling down on their hatred of trans folks. Just when I think they can’t get any more putrid about promoting genocide for one of our most marginalized communities, they sink to the occasion.
But for those of us who remain vigilante in trying NOT to be complete pieces of shit, I thought I might make a quick reference on some basic ways to be a better ally.
- Care about issues that don’t directly affect you.
- Address transphobic biases and bigotry, especially in spaces without transgender visibility.
- Ensure transgender voices lead discussions about transgender issues.
- When you mess up; monitor yourself for defensiveness and cis-fragility.
- Stay teachable: being an ally and being transphobic are rarely mutually exclusive.
